WHAT IS NHS? NHS is a national organization that recognizes outstanding high school students based not only on grades, but also on excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Today, more than one million students participate in NHS and NJHS (National Junior Honors Society). NHS chapters are found in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF NHS? According to the NHS Constitution (yes, NHS has its own Constitution ;-), the four main purposes are "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." HOW DO I GET INTO NHS? The student must have a cumulative average of at least 90 percent. Candidates are further evaluated based on service, leadership, and character. Selection is by a Faculty Council. If your average is at least 90%, you will receive a letter indicating the further steps you must take to complete your application to the Hilton chapter of NHS.
